WH press secretary is taken to task about southern border wall construction

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had one heck of a difficult Friday.

During the day’s press briefing, Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy took Jean-Pierre to task for President Joe Biden’s hypocrisy on the building of the southern border wall.

The backstory

Last week, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it will be completing certain parts of the U.S.-Mexico border wall, particularly near Yuma, Arizona. This is one of the busiest illegal alien crossing sites that there is along the southern border.

This, to say the least, is problematic for Biden for several reasons. For one thing, Biden, as a presidential candidate, insisted that “not another foot” of the southern border wall would be completed under his watch – Biden did stop border wall construction earlier in his presidency. For another thing, border wall construction goes against most Democrats’ open borders beliefs.

So, the big question is “why?” Why is Biden all of a sudden willing to against his campaign promise? Why is he restarting what he stopped? Why is doing something that goes against the Democrats’ position on the southern border wall? etc.

These are the sorts of questions that Doocy asked Jean-Pierre on Friday.

Jean-Pierre explains (not really)

Jean-Pierre basically had a couple of talking points and she adhered to them strictly during her exchange with Doocy. In response to, “why is the Biden administration building a border wall in Arizona?” Jean-Pierre said:

So, we’re not, we’re not finishing the wall. We are cleaning up the mess the prior administration left behind in their failed attempt to build a wall. And I just want to be very, very clear here. On day one we returned the money, the $8 billion dollars the prior administration took from our military, we gave that back to the military for military families, for schools for bases. That what that money was being used…that’s what it was taken away from. Again, what we’re doing is cleaning up the mess that the prior administration has done.

Doocy followed up, “but President Biden when he was a candidate that there will not be another foot of wall constructed in my administration. So what changed?” Jean-Pierre responded by once again insisting “we are not finishing the wall.”

Then, Doocy asked, “if walls work in that part of Arizona, is this the administration trying to get migrants to cross somewhere else, like in Texas? What is the plan?” to which Jean-Pierre responded:

We are not finishing a wall, we are cleaning up the mess that the prior administration made. We are trying to save lives. This is what…this is what the prior administration left behind that we are now cleaning up.

Jean-Pierre repeated “we are not finishing the wall” two more times before Doocy asked whether filling in part of the wall is “racist” considering that Democrats called it racist when former President Donald Trump tried to build the wall. All Jean-Pierre did was reiterate her talking points, ending with, “we are not finishing the wall.”

The truth of the matter

It is that we are in an election year and the Democrats are in desperate need of votes.

That’s the only thing that really explains why it is that Biden is willing to go against what he previously said and did by filling in parts of the border wall: He thinks it will win more votes than it will lose. We’ll see if he is right.
