White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan admitted on Tuesday that a “fair amount” of American military equipment was left in Afghanistan and is now under the control of the Taliban, according to the Washington Examiner.
“We don’t have a complete picture of where every article of defense material has gone,” Sullivan confessed.
“But, certainly, a fair amount of it has fallen into the hands of the Taliban, and obviously, we don’t have a sense that they are going to readily hand it over to us at the airport,” he added.
The Biden administration argued that it planned to leave some American military equipment and weapons in the war-torn nation. However, it had been intended for Afghan security forces and definitely not for Taliban terrorists.
Sullivan argued the Afghan military chose not to fight but instead allowed the Taliban to take control of most of its supplies and resources, much of which was supplied by the U.S. government over the course of the past two decades.
“Those Black Hawks were not given to the Taliban. They were given to the Afghan National Security Forces to be able to defend themselves at the specific request of President Ghani” after the Afghan leader “came to the Oval Office and asked,” Sullivan said, according to the report.
Many Republicans have already spoken out, sounding the alarm that the Taliban will likely use the U.S. equipment to bolster what is now a very large safe haven nation for future terrorist activity planning.
A quick collapse
The sudden departure of American military personnel has led to the sudden rise of the Taliban taking total control over Afghanistan. Thousands of Americans remain trapped in the nation, and while plans are currently underway to evacuate those who remain, the chaos has led to much uncertainty and great risk for those seeking to flee.
In addition, thousands of Afghans who sided with America over the past two decades are now also at risk. The Washington Post noted that there may be requests for up to 80,000 people fleeing the nation with the ultimate hope of getting to America as a refugee.
Biden now faces his greatest criticisms in a failure many are comparing with the fall of Saigon during the Vietnam War. This defining moment will likely plague Biden and possibly the entirety of the Democratic Party for months and years to come.
Despite the worsening situation, Biden has only provided a brief speech to Americans — and the world — before quickly returning to vacation at Camp David. He reportedly returned to the White House on Tuesday night.
The sad reality is that after two decades of holding back violence in Afghanistan, Biden’s decision has left a large number of American weapons and equipment into the very hands of those they have fought against.
