White House wants more deportations ahead of midterms: Report

During a 2019 Democratic presidential primary race, then-candidate Joe Biden famously said that those interested in seeking asylum “should come” to the United States.

Yet as America now faces an unprecedented migrant crisis ahead of this year’s midterm election, Biden’s administration has been scrambling to adopt a new border policy.

According to Fox News, the White House has attempted to pressure Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) into ramping up the deportation of illegal aliens.

The network noted that this move comes as the country has been confronted by an average of 200,000 new illegal migrants every month over the past five months.

More deportations?

What’s more, Fox News pointed to ICE statistics that show the agency removed just 59,011 individuals from the country in fiscal year 2021.

That figure represents only a fraction of the removals which were routinely carried out under the president’s predecessor. There were 185,884 deportations conducted in fiscal year 2020 and a whopping 267,258 in fiscal year 2019.

Despite getting a push from the White House, Fox News stated that “so far the Department of Homeland Security hasn’t taken a more aggressive approach.”

When asked whether the administration is seeking to increase deportations, a spokesperson, told Fox News Digital that the Biden administration is “committed to enforcing our immigration laws in a safe, orderly, and humane way.”

“This includes working to process asylum claims expeditiously, granting relief where it is merited, and removing those found not to have a legal basis to remain in the United States,” the spokesperson went on to insist.

Poll says “invasion”

Meanwhile, a poll published by Ipsos last week found that some 54% of Americans believe that the United States “is facing an invasion at the southern border.”

Further, 50% also agreed that illegal aliens “bringing fentanyl and other illegal drugs over the southern border are responsible for the increase in overdoses and drug deaths in the U.S.”

While those views were most commonly found among Republicans, the poll found that 40% of Democrats think the country is facing an invasion while another 36% say illegal migrants are to blame for the upswing in drug deaths.
