In response to more than a month and half of nightly vandalism and concerted attacks on a federal courthouse in Portland, Oregon, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), at the direction of President Donald Trump, dispatched additional federal law enforcement personnel to help defend federal property.
The move drew sharp criticism from Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who likened the federal agents to “stormtroopers,” a comparison that acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf described as “absurd” and “dangerous,” The Washington Times reported.
Wolf: “It’s disgusting”
Acting Sec. Wolf, in a recent appearance on Fox News‘ “America’s Newsroom,” was asked to respond to the criticism from Pelosi and others comparing DHS agents to Nazi stormtroopers or Soviet secret police.
“One, it’s disgusting, two, it’s an assault on every federal or civilian or state and local law enforcement officer who has taken an oath to protect their communities, to protect, in our case, federal facilities, to do their jobs and I think it’s very, very dangerous,” Wolf said.
The acting secretary went on to say, “The fact that you’re going to call any law enforcement, whether it’s ‘stormtroopers’ — we’ve heard them referred to as ‘thugs’ or ‘Gestapo’ — that is absolutely absurd.”
“They are enforcing law, they are enforcing statute passed by Congress, passed by individuals like Speaker Pelosi and others, who have voted on legislation that gives the Department of Homeland Security the authority to protect federal facilities and make arrests on individuals that are targeting, criminal acts targeting federal facilities and federal law enforcement officers,” Wolf continued.
“Perhaps it’s a talking point,” he added. “The reasons for doing that are unknown to me but it’s very, very dangerous.”
Pelosi goes too far
The federal courthouse in Portland has been vandalized and attacked on a nightly basis since protests erupted nationwide over the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota in late May. Local Democratic officials have done little to address the chaos, hence the dispatching in mid-July of federal agents to bolster the building’s security.
In response to that move, as well as to complaints of arrests being made by unidentified officers in unmarked cars — which the DHS disputes — Pelosi called for “Trump & his stormtroopers” to be “stopped.”
“Unidentified stormtroopers. Unmarked cars. Kidnapping protesters and causing severe injuries in response to graffiti. These are not the actions of a democratic republic. @DHSgov’s actions in Portland undermine its mission. Trump & his stormtroopers must be stopped,” Pelosi tweeted just days after the federal reinforcements arrived on the scene.
Wolf has made it clear that neither he nor the administration has any intention of withdrawing the additional security forces from the federal courthouse in Portland while it is under threat, no matter what Democrats or the media have to say.
If ever there was a need for more proof that the Democrats have embraced lawlessness and mob rule, the fact that Pelosi would compare federal law enforcement agents protecting federal property against anarchists — as is their job as per legislative approval from Congress — to Nazi enforcers is all that is needed.
