Woman with legal handgun stops mass shooter

While Democrats point to mass shootings as a reason to push gun confiscation, they’re far less likely to speak up when a legally armed citizen prevents a massacre.

That phenomenon was recently on display again when a woman took down a gunman at a graduation party.

The shooter was prohibited from owning firearms

According to Fox News, the deadly encounter played out this past Wednesday at an apartment complex in Charleston, West Virginia. Police say 37-year-old Dennis Butler showed up with a rifle and began firing into a crowd of people.

A woman responded by drawing her handgun and fatally shooting Butler, an act that was praised by law enforcement.

“Instead of running from the threat, she engaged with the threat and saved several lives last night,” Chief of Detectives Tony Hazelett was quoted as saying.

West Virginia’s Eye Witness News reported that Butler had an extensive criminal record and was legally barred from owning a firearm.

This included charges of malicious wounding as well as convictions in Pennsylvania for child neglect and abuse. The outlet noted that Butler was wanted for transferring and receiving stolen goods at the time of his death.

Gun owners can prevent tragedies

While often not receiving national coverage, legally armed citizens have frequently used their weapons to avert tragedy.

On its website, the National Rifle Association (NRA) maintains a list of incidents in which gun owners successfully defend themselves and others.

Examples include a Florida man who halted a shooting at a back-to-school event in 2018, something Titusville Deputy Chief Todd Hutchinson expressed gratitude for.

Hutchinson told WFTV 9, “We are extremely grateful that nobody else was injured in this incident. This suspect opened fire at a crowded public park, this could have been so much worse.”
