Attorney L. Lin Wood, already a famed defamation lawyer, vaulted into national prominence after representing Covington Catholic high school student Nick Sandmann in his legal fight against the dishonest media, and has since been a zealous advocate for President Donald Trump’s legal fight against 2020 election results, particularly in Georgia.
But recently Wood has gone much farther than most in his assertions of a broad conspiracy to “steal” the election from Trump. By Friday, many conservatives were left scratching their heads after Wood claimed on Twitter that Vice President Mike Pence could be a part of that conspiracy and could be arrested and executed for treason.
Wood’s provocative accusation came following a thread of tweets in which he listed off several of the purported major players in an anti-Trump conspiracy theory, with the Democratic Party, the Chinese Communist Party, and other foreign actors being the most obvious participants, Breitbart reported.
The attorney also pointed an accusatory finger at wealthy global elites like George Soros and Bill Gates, as well as the CIA, and even the Republican Party establishment — which apparently includes prominent figures like Pence, Chief Justice John Roberts, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), among others.
Wood tweeted, “These groups aspire to the goals of Communism. A ruling elite & an oppressed class of people who exist to serve those in power. When arrests for treason begin, put Chief Justice John Roberts, VP Mike Pence @VP @Mike_Pence, & Mitch McConnell @senatemajldr at top of list.”
The inclusion of Pence among the anti-Trump conspiracy likely stems from the news that Pence had pushed back on a lawsuit brought by a group of Republicans that attempted to give Pence the authority to choose which electoral votes to count on January 6, when Congress meets to ratify the Electoral College vote. The lawsuit was dismissed by a judge.
When pressed by another Twitter user about his faulty logic regarding Pence, Wood doubled down: “If Pence is arrested, @SecPompeo will save the election. Pence will be in jail awaiting trial for treason. He will face execution by firing squad. He is a coward & will sing like a bird & confess ALL.”
Wood’s tweet drew pushback on social media, including from a top member of President Trump’s legal team, Jenna Ellis, and arguably Wood’s most famous client, Sandmann, according to Business Insider.
“To be clear: I do not support the statements from Attorney Lin Wood. I support the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution,” Ellis tweeted Friday evening.
Sandmann quote-tweeted Wood and remarked, “I’m sorry but what the hell.”
Later, in a since-deleted reply from another user defending Wood about how “loyalty is everything,” Sandmann replied, “No, the truth is. And truthfully, this is a dumb tweet.” Then, in response to another critic, he wrote, “Your definition of loyalty is equivalent to being blackmailed to support something that I disagree with. True loyalty involves criticism when necessary.”
Business Insider noted that there didn’t appear to have been any response from President Trump, Pence, Roberts, or McConnell.
