Washington Post writer slams Justice Gorsuch for not wearing mask

The United States Supreme Court has heard arguments over some contentious issues lately, with the latest being one of President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

The controversy has resulted in harsh words from many court-watchers — but rather than going after the things he said, one newspaper editor recently attacked a conservative justice on the high court over his choice of face covering, or lack thereof.

As FrontPage Magazine contributor Daniel Greenfield noted in a Sunday article, The Washington Post published an op-ed late last week in which the paper’s deputy editorial page editor, Ruth Marcus, went after Justice Neil Gorsuch for not donning a mask.

“Where was Justice Neil M. Gorsuch’s mask?” the left-wing editor demanded in her piece for the Post. “If you think this sounds like a trivial question, I dissent. I believe it goes to the heart of our fraying social fabric.”

Resisting control

Marcus went on to complain that she had been provided with “no response” from the court’s public information office after asking why Gorsuch chose not to wear a mask, particularly given that fellow Justice Sonia Sotomayor suffers from diabetes, a condition said by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to exacerbate the risk of severe complications from COVID-19.

The editor then asserted that mask-wearing is simply “not the Gorsuch way,” as evidenced by “his comments in the case involving vaccine mandates for staff at hospitals, nursing homes and other institutions that take Medicare and Medicaid funds.”

Marcus also stressed the Trump-appointed justice’s “repeated invocation of how the government was trying to ‘control’ employees.”

She acknowledged that the word is “from the statute at issue,” but argued that “it’s also a notion that seemed to particularly exercise the libertarian Gorsuch.”

Post owner Jeff Bezos also maskless

However, Greenfield pointed out in his rebuttal of the Post op-ed that Gorsuch is far from being the only one who prefers to forgo a mask: Marcus’ liberal employer does as well.

“A brief review of James Bond villain, Amazon honcho, and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos shows no apparent snaps of him wearing masks when he’s partying in his yacht, going into space, or hugging The Rock at the People’s Choice Awards,” Greenfield wrote Sunday.

“If it’s good enough for Ruth’s boss, it ought to be good enough for a Supreme Court justice,” the conservative commentator added for FrontPage Magazine.

“Perhaps Ruth can take up the fraying social fabric with her boss,” he suggested. “Or doesn’t mask shaming work that way?”
