Trump brings back pledge to end Obamacare

Open enrollment has begun for Obamacare recipients, and once again, premiums are going up.

Declaring the cost of coverage "out of control," Donald Trump brought back his pledge to end the controversial healthcare law in a social media post Saturday.

Trump targets Obamacare again

The late John McCain, a Trump foe, killed the push to repeal Obamacare in 2017 with a dramatic thumb-down vote on the Senate floor.

While Republicans have largely given up on the Obamacare issue, Trump suggested another effort to replace it was worthwhile.

"The cost of Obamacare is out of control, plus, it’s not good Healthcare," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Sunday.

"I’m seriously looking at alternatives. We had a couple of Republican Senators who campaigned for 6 years against it, and then raised their hands not to terminate it. It was a low point for the Republican Party, but we should never give up!"

Costs rising

Trump's post included a screenshot of a Wall Street Journal op-ed about the "unintended consequences" of Obamacare titled, "Elizabeth Warren has an Obamacare epiphany."

Obama promised to make healthcare affordable for many Americans, but many would say the overhaul had the opposite effect.

The average monthly cost for the lowest-tier, high-deductible plan is nearly $500, not including premium tax credits that many recipients depend on to lower the cost.

The lowest-cost bronze plans will see average premium hikes of 6% in 2024, with surges as high as 16% in New York and Alaska.

Meanwhile, the majority of Americans who rely on employer-sponsored plans will see increased costs of about 6% in 2024.

Biden responds

Despite its flaws, Obamacare remains a generally popular program. Roughly 60 percent of Americans approve, according to Kaiser Family Foundation.

With the 2024 election less than a year away, President Biden is eager to paint Republicans as hostile to Social Security and Medicare, although Trump has promised not to touch the popular social programs, which gobble up a huge share of federal spending each year.

The Biden campaign was quick to blast Trump over his promise to target Obamacare, painting Trump as a threat to affordable health care.

“Donald Trump’s America is one where millions of people lose their health insurance and seniors and families across the country face exorbitant costs just to stay healthy. Those are the stakes next November,” Biden's campaign said.

" A free people [claim] their rights, as derived from the laws of nature."
