Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) has been removed from her GOP leadership position, but she certainly didn’t go quietly.
Following her removal, the Washington Examiner reports that Cheney vowed to block former President Donald Trump from ever again becoming the U.S. president.
“I will do everything”
Cheney made her comments to reports just after she was removed by Republicans from her leadership position.
“I will do everything I can to ensure the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office,” Cheney said.
The congresswoman went on to say that she will now look to lead the wing of the Republican Party that stands opposed to Trump and pro-Trump Republicans.
“Going forward, the nation needs a strong Republican Party,” Cheney said. “The nation needs a party that is based upon fundamental principles of conservatism. I am committed and dedicated to ensuring that is how the party moves forward, and I am committed to doing that.”
Cheney’s spot atop the GOP Conference has been in jeopardy ever since she voted to impeach Trump following the January 6th Capitol riot. Since then, despite much criticism, Cheney has maintained her anti-Trump stance. She even did so in a piece for the Democrat-read Washington Post, in an attempt to defend her views.
Republicans, in a closed-door meeting on Wednesday morning, finally voted to remove Cheney from that GOP Conference Chair position.
Republican leaders have been reluctant to say anything too specific about why they are removing Cheney. Rather, they usually say something vague along the lines that Cheney is not properly representing the party.
What we still do not know is who Cheney’s replacement will be. A favorite, however, appears to be Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who has received the endorsement of many, including Trump.
Following Cheney’s ouster, Former President Trump issued a statement referring to Cheney as “a bitter, horrible human being.”
“Liz Cheney is a bitter, horrible human being,” Trump said. “I watched her yesterday and realized how bad she is for the Republican Party. She has no personality or anything good having to do with politics or our Country.”
