AG Barr asked to investigate Hunter Biden allegations

Fox News reports that Republicans in the House of Representatives are calling upon Attorney General William Barr to appoint a special counsel to investigate the allegations that have been made against former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

Eleven House Republicans – including Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Ted Yoho (R-FL), and Andy Harris, (R-MD) – made the request in a letter that they sent to Barr on Monday.

“We request that the Department of Justice immediately appoint an independent, unbiased special counsel to investigate the issues that we have raised – as well as any corresponding legal or ethical issues that might be uncovered from the former vice president’s 47 years in public office,” the letter reads.

The issues

Last week, the New York Post published a bombshell report that appears to show some kind of connection between Hunter Biden’s overseas business dealings and his father’s position as vice president. The information comes by way of emails found on an abandoned laptop that appears to have belonged to Hunter Biden.

“Last week, reports surfaced about an uncovered hard drive and laptop purportedly belonging to Hunter Biden,” the letter reads. “Emails, allegedly on the hard drive, have indicated that Hunter Biden may have helped to orchestrate a payout to his father, former Vice President Joe Biden, from his dealings with a Chinese energy corporation, and that he may have compromised the integrity of his father’s role as Vice president of the United States with his business dealings in Ukraine.”

The latter is a reference to the original Post report, which showed two things: (1) that Hunter set up a meeting between his vice president-father and a top executive at Burisma, the Ukrainian energy firm for which he worked; and (2) Joe Biden, contrary to previous claims, had knowledge about his son’s overseas business dealings.

The other email referenced by the members of the House GOP appears to detail a business deal involving, among others, Hunter Biden and a Chinese energy firm. Fox confirmed the authenticity of this email through an individual who was copied on it.

The House GOP specifically wants Barr to investigate “whether the former vice president (1) received foreign monies during his tenure in the Obama administration and (2) if former Vice President Biden allowed his son to peddle access to his father with foreign business entities.”

The FBI and other U.S. intelligence agencies now agree that the laptop, which the FBI is in possession of, and the emails found on it are not part of a Russian disinformation campaign, as some are trying to claim. In other words, the Post story appears to be the real deal.

Trump weighs in

President Trump, during an interview with Fox on Tuesday, also called for Barr to “act fast” and  “appoint somebody.”

“We’ve got to get the attorney general to act,” Trump said. “He’s gotta act, and he’s gotta act fast, and he’s gotta appoint somebody. This is major corruption, and we have to know about this before the election. The attorney general has to act.”

Barr is already under pressure for his handling of the investigation into the origins of the Russia collusion investigation. In addition, he has constantly faced criticism from the left for supposedly doing President Trump’s bidding. The letter-writers asked for a response by October 23rd.
