August was another big month for illegal southern border crossings

America remains on track for a record number of illegal southern border crossings in 2021.

According to Fox News, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) just revealed that, for the second straight month, it witness over 200,000 illegal southern border crossings during the month of August.

The numbers

The CBP says that, during the month of August, it had 208,887 encounters with migrants illegally crossing from Mexico into the United States. The overwhelming majority of the crossings were either single adults or family units, while unaccompanied children accounted for about 19,000 of them.

As stated at the outset, August was the second straight month that saw over 200,000 crossings, but August did see about a 2 percent dropoff in illegal crossings from July. Although this appears unremarkable, which it mostly is, it actually is the first time since President Joe Biden took office that there has been a decrease in illegal border crossings.

August 2021, however, still saw a significant increase in illegal southern border crossings from previous years. It was a 317 percent increase over August 2020 and a 233 percent increase over August 2019.

Experts have predicted that America is likely to see over 2 million illegal southern border crossings in 2021, which would put it into record territory. The numbers from August would suggest that the country remains on pace to hit that 2 million mark.

Who’s staying?

The Biden administration continues to enforce Title 42 of the U.S. public health code to expel some illegal immigrants from the country. The CPB’s report indicates that, in August, about 44 percent of those that illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border were expelled under this policy, which was first enacted by former President Donald Trump.

In addition, Fox News reports that, as a result of the recent court order, the Biden administration has moved back to enforcing Trump’s Remain in Mexico policy, which requires illegal immigrants to wait in Mexico while their case is pending.

Fox reports, however, that Biden continues to let unaccompanied migrant children stay. The outlet says that Biden also continues to let families with children less than a year old stay as well as families with a pregnancy.

A major point of contention

Biden continues to be heavily criticized for his handling of the southern border crisis, despite his attempt to place the blame on Trump. Another layer has been added to this criticism with Biden’s recent coronavirus vaccine mandate. Many have taken issue with the fact that illegal immigrants are exempt from the mandate, as they have also been from other coronavirus restrictions imposed upon the American people by Biden.

The backstory, here, is that the Biden administration continues to blame the recent coronavirus surge solely on unvaccinated Americans, despite the fact that it has been caught releasing coronavirus-positive illegal immigrants into American communities.

Accordingly, many Republicans are arguing that, if Biden really wanted to get the coronavirus under control, he would start by securing the southern border. The Biden administration, though, continues to deny that there is any truth in this line of reasoning.
