President-elect Joe Biden has the National Rifle Association (NRA) in his crosshairs.
Breitbart reports that Biden has recently pledged to “defeat the NRA.”
Here we go
Biden made his pledge in a press release that he published on January 8th, just before the weekend. This was the ten-year anniversary of the Tuscon, Arizona, shooting that took place back on January 8, 2011.
In his statement, Biden remembered the lives that were lost on that day. He also praised those who were injured but have since survived. This includes Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords (D), who has since become a leading proponent of gun control.
“Among those wounded in that horrific attack was my friend Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, whose perseverance and immeasurable courage in the years since has been an inspiration to millions,” Biden stated.
He continued: “Like so many survivors of violence, Gabby has turned tragedy into purpose, working with other leaders across the country to transform the fight for gun safety reform from a cause to a movement. Every day she fights to make our communities safer and move us closer to our goal of a nation free from gun violence.”
Biden then concluded his statement with a “pledge” to “work together with” the likes of Giffords and to “defeat the NRA.”
“As President, I pledge to continue to work together with Congresswoman Giffords, and with survivors, families, and advocates across the country, to defeat the NRA and end the epidemic of gun violence in America,” Biden said.
This was expected
Breitbart reports that “Biden campaigned for the presidency on a platform of defeating the NRA.” According to the outlet, Biden “released an overview of his gun control proposals,” which “included a reference to his opposition to the NRA.”
Newsweek has also reported on some of Biden’s other gun control proposals. These include, among other things, banning the sale and manufacture of assault-style rifles, requiring gun owners to register their guns with the government, and starting a voluntary buyback program.
Now that the Democrats control the presidency, the Senate, and the House of Representatives, we can expect them to pursue all of these ideas.
As we know, though, Democrats are unlikely to achieve their goal, in Biden’s words, of ending “the epidemic of gun violence.” There are examples from around the world that show that gun violence has continued, in some cases has even increased, in those areas where gun regulation is most stringent. Gun regulations don’t stop bad actors; they only stop good actors from being able to defend themselves.
