For nearly a year, President Joe Biden has been sharply criticized for his handling of the crisis along America’s southern border. However, some of that criticism recently came from an unexpected source.
The Daily Wire reported that during a television interview, former President Barack Obama called current border conditions “unsustainable.”
“Immigration is tough,” the former commander in chief was quoted as saying to “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts on Monday.
Former President Obama: “We have borders”
“It always has been because, on the one hand, I think we are naturally a people that wants to help others,” Obama went on to acknowledge.
“And we see tragedy and hardship and families that are desperately trying to get here so that their kids are safe, and they’re in some cases fleeing violence or catastrophe.”
However, Obama then sharply broke with what has become the dominant narrative among Democrats, insisting, “At the same time, we’re a nation state.”
“We have borders,” the former president went on to add. “The idea that we can just have open borders is something that … as a practical matter, is unsustainable.”
Those comments fly in the face of statements made by far-left members of Obama own party, with New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other members of the so-called “Squad” regularly calling for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to be abolished.
Number of illegal aliens has skyrocketed under President Biden
It also appears to have been an implied shot at his former vice president’s record on border security, as the number of people illegally crossing now is far higher than it was under former President Donald Trump.
Fox News has reported that in August, Customs and Border Protection personnel logged some 208,887 encounters with illegal crossers.
The figure represents an astounding 317 percent increase compared to August of last year, when just 50,014 such encounters were catalogued. August did see fewer encounters than July, however, when 212,000 took place. Those numbers include known gang members and individuals with violent criminal histories.
Fox News reported in July that Border Patrol agents apprehended people affiliated with 18th Street gang, the Gulf Cartel and MS-13 as well as a number of convicted sex offenders.
