A new push is being made in Washington D.C. to remove some of America’s most iconic monuments, Breitbart reports.
Back in July, Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) created a committee called the District of Columbia Facilities and Commemorative Expressions (DC FACES). The committee was tasked with determining whether historically-named buildings, monuments, and so forth, are “inconsistent with DC values and in some way encouraged the oppression of African Americans and other communities of color or contributed to our long history of systemic racism.”
Some of the things the committee looked for were “participation in slavery, systemic racism, mistreatment of, or actions that suppressed equality for, persons of color, women and LGBTQ communities and violation of the DC Human Right Act.”
DC FACES has now completed its task. On Tuesday, it issued its report.
Among those items it has recommended to be either removed, relocated, or contextualized are the Columbus Fountain, the Benjamin Franklin Statue, the Andrew Jackson Statue, the Jefferson Memorial, the George Mason Memorial, the Newlands Memorial Fountain, the Albert Pike Statue, the Washington Monument, and the George Washington Statue.
The committee, as Breitbart reports, also recommended the renaming of several “public schools; residential buildings and campuses; community and recreational centers; parks, fields and playgrounds; government buildings; streets, roads and bridges; landmarks, and commemorative works; and statues and memorials.”
DC FACES said that it has examined over 3,050 properties and monuments, and, of those, it found 153 “persons of concern.”
Mayor Bowser has stated that she now looks forward “to reviewing and advancing their recommendations.”
The White House responds
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany promptly condemned the report.
“The radically liberal mayor of Washington, D.C., is repeating the same left-wing narrative used to incite dangerous riots: demolishing our history and destroying our great heritage,” McEnany said in a statement.
McEnany continued: “President Donald J. Trump believes these places should be preserved, not torn down; respected, not hated; and passed on for generations to come. As long as President Trump is in the White House, the mayor’s irresponsible recommendations will go absolutely nowhere.”
We ought to be thankful that we have someone like President Trump leading our country at a time like this. If the Democrats were in charge, most of our country’s history would have been censored by now.
