One high-profile Democrat has decided to join forces with a Republican on a controversial issue.
Breitbart reports that Reps. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) and Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) have introduced a bill that would stop federal funds from going to schools that allow males to compete in female sports.
The bill . . .
. . . has been named by Gabbard and Mullin the “Protect Women’s Sports Act of 2020.”
It reads: “[For the] purposes of determining compliance with title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 in athletics, sex shall be determined on the basis of biological sex as determined at birth by a physician.”
The HuffPost reports: “Title IX protects people from discrimination based on sex in educational programs that receive federal financial assistance. The new bill would bar schools from receiving such funds if they permit ‘a person whose biological sex at birth is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designated for women or girls.'”
A similar bill was introduced earlier this year by the Senate. Rather than “sex shall be determined on the basis of biological sex as determined at birth by a physician,” the Senate bill reads, “sex shall be recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”
These bills come in response to the decision by many schools to allow transgender individuals to compete in female sports. Many have argued that this is unfair to girls and women considering that males have certain biological advantages in athletics.
Gabbard and Mullin are going a step further arguing that it is a violation of Title IX civil rights protections.
“Title IX is being weakened by some states who are misinterpreting Title IX, creating uncertainty, undue hardship and lost opportunities for female athletes,” they argue.
Gabbard and Mullin believe that their bill will “ensure women and girls in sports have the opportunity to compete and excel on a level playing field.”
It’s a difficult issue for Dems
The general point here – that it is not fair to allow males to compete against females in sports – is a valid one. It is difficult point to argue against, especially for the Democrats who have claimed to champion women’s rights. But, believe it or not, some Democrats are doing just that arguing that the bill presented by Gabbard and Mullin is transphobic.
Here’s the Democrats’ problem: this particular issue demonstrates that wanting equal rights for women and equal rights for transgender people is not compatible. This, in turn, points to the problem with just about all Democratic policy: it never is in line with reality. And, when the rules of reality are broken with these policies, it is those whom the Democrats claim to be helping who end up hurt.
