Democrat Senator accuses Republicans of court-packing

Democrats are now trying to flip the script.

Fox News reports that Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) is now accusing Republicans of court-packing.

What?!

A key question for weeks now is whether Joe Biden, if elected president, will seek to pack the Supreme Court. It is a question that he, and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), have refused to answer.

Now, however, it appears that at least one Democratic Senator is going to run some interference for Biden by accusing Republicans of court-packing.

“I’m going to be laying out the ways in which Judge Barrett’s views … are not just extreme, they’re disqualifying,” Coons said. “It constitutes court-packing.”

Here, Coons, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was speaking about his strategy in the upcoming Senate confirmation hearing of Judge Amy Coney Barrett. It’s not immediately clear how the second sentence follows from the first.

Typical Dem. Logic

Also unclear is how the filling of a Supreme Court vacancy constitutes court-packing. The widely-accepted definition of court-packing, after all, is expanding the Supreme Court so as to give whichever party is running the government the opportunity to appoint justices so as to get the Supreme Court on their side.

This, of course, is not what is currently happening, and Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) is already calling Coons out, accusing him of using “Orwellian” language.

“Claiming that court-packing is filling open vacancies that obviously isn’t what court-packing means,” Sasse said.

Sasse went to question why it is that Biden has refused to answer the “really basic question” of whether he, as president, would look to pack the Supreme Court. “What they’re really talking about is the suicide bombing two branches of government,” Sasse said.

It’s about to happen

This upcoming week will mark the start of Barrett’s Senate confirmation process to the Supreme Court. Both Sasse and Coons will be a part of that process, which will likely end up being the most contentious Supreme Court confirmation process in American history – a surprising statement after what America witnessed during the confirmation process of Brett Kavanaugh.

Coons, with this nonsensical allegation of court-packing, shows us that the Democrats are ready to fight dirty.
