Dr. Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, appears to have just changed his mind on an important issue.
The Fox News Channel reports that Fauci recently admitted that he is “not convinced” that the coronavirus pandemic had natural origins.
“No, I’m not convinced”
Fauci was recently asked whether he still believes that the coronavirus pandemic emerged naturally in an interview with Politifact.
“No, actually. … No, I’m not convinced about that,” Fauci said.
Fauci added that, “certainly, the people who’ve investigated it say it likely was the emergence from an animal reservoir that then infected individuals, but it could’ve been something else, and we need to find that out.”
Accordingly, Fauci, during the interview, said that we ought to “continue to investigate what went on in China until we find out to the best of our ability exactly what happened.” He later added, “I’m perfectly in favor of any investigation that looks into the origin of the virus.”
This was a somewhat surprising thing for Fauci to say considering his previous comments on the origins of the coronavirus pandemic. Last May, in fact, as the Washington Examiner reports, Fauci actually laughed off the alternative theory to natural emergence, that the coronavirus pandemic was the result of a leak at the Wuhan lab.
“If you accept the premise, which is very strongly supported by scientific evidence, that it was not deliberately mutated and deliberately changed, and you say, if it was in the wild and evolving, the likelihood it jumped species naturally, someone will say, ‘Well, maybe somebody took it from the wild, put it in the lab, and then it escaped from the lab.’ But that means it was in the wild to begin with!'” Fauci said.
“So, that’s why I don’t get what they’re talking about,” he continued. “If it isn’t manipulated in the lab and you’re trying to say it escaped from the lab, then how did it get in the lab? It got in the lab because somebody isolated it from the environment. So that’s why I don’t spend a lot of time going in that circular argument.”
It is unclear what has caused Fauci to do a 180 here. But, as we know, it is not unusual for the doctor to flip flop on important coronavirus-related questions.
The official position of the World Health Organization (WHO) is that it is “extremely unlikely” that the coronavirus pandemic resulted from a leak at the Wuhan lab.
The alternative is the natural emergence theory, but several holes have been poked in this theory, including the fact that the host animal has still not been found.
