Breitbart reports that Republican leaders are taking preventive action following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) latest coronavirus guidance update.
That CDC update included a two-part recommendation.
Part one was a recommendation for indoor mask wearing for vaccinated and unvaccinated Americans who live in areas of the country where the coronavirus has a high transmissibility rate. And, part two was a recommendation that students in grades K-12 be required to wear masks during the upcoming school year.
It will likely come as no surprise to the readers of this site that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is, once again, leading the way here for the Republicans.
DeSantis revealed on Friday that he will be signing an executive order that will give parents in the state of Florida the right to determine whether or not to have their children wear facemasks during school.
“Very soon I’ll be signing an executive order which directs the Florida Department of Education and Department of Health to issue emergency rules protecting the rights of parents to make this decision about wearing masks for their children,” DeSantis said. “We think that that’s the most fair way to do it.”
DeSantis had previously said, “We want kids to be able to be kids. We need them to be able to breathe. It’s terribly uncomfortable for them to do it. There’s not very much science behind it.”
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), this time, is even going a step further than DeSantis. Abbott, on Thursday, signed an executive order that stops its cities from imposing either a mask or a vaccine requirement on its residents.
The order states, in part, that “no governmental entity, including a county, city, school district, and public health authority, and no governmental official may require any person to wear a face covering or to mandate that another person wear a face covering.”
The order also states, “No governmental entity can compel any individual to receive a COVID-19 vaccine administered under an emergency use authorization.”
And, the order goes on to prevent a number of other practices, including government-funded entities asking consumers for their vaccination status.
There does seem to be a push for mask and vaccine mandates coming, particularly after the CDC’s latest guidance update. Texas and Florida are clearly two states that are looking to get out ahead of this one.
