The Democratic Party may soon be no more.
Fox News reports that a group of Republicans in the House of Representatives has introduced a resolution requiring the Democratic Party to either change its name or be banned from the House for its historical connection to slavery.
Cancel culture hypocrisy
In recent months, following the death of George Floyd, the cancel culture trend has gained momentum. Members of the left have called for the removal of things – most notably historical statues – that could in any way be connected to slavery.
Just this week, for example, we saw cancel culture being carried out in the halls of Congress. Democrats and a good portion of Republicans in the House voted to remove confederate statues from the U.S. Capitol.
We don’t agree with cancel culture. But, here, the focus is on the fact that cancel culture only seems to apply to everyone else, i.e. non-liberals.
If cancel culture were to be applied equally across the board, then the Democratic Party must be canceled. Hence:
The resolution was put forth by a group of House Republicans, led by Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-TX), and, in part, it outlines the Democratic Party’s historical connection to slavery.
“As outlined in the resolution, a great portion of the history of the Democratic Party is filled with racism and hatred,” Gohmert said in a statement.
The resolution cites the fact that the Democratic Party supported slavery during a 16 year period from 1840-1856 and it lists racist actions by Democratic Party members up through the early-to-mid 1900s. Gohmert, on Twitter, provided the example of Democrat President Woodrow Willson’s administration, which “in 1912 began a racial segregation policy for govt employees. By 1914, the Wilson Administration required a photo be submitted with each employment application.”
Considering this racist past, the resolution gives Democrats an ultimatum: either to rename their party or be banned from the House. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is also urged in the Resolution to “remove any items that names, symbolizes or mentions any political organization or party that has ever held a public position that supported slavery or the Confederacy.”
What of it?
This resolution probably isn’t going anywhere. It is unlikely the Democrats will support it, and Republican support is currently unclear.
But, this is all besides the point of the resolution, which is to expose the hypocrisy of Democrats who are adhering to this cancel culture trend. We’ll have to see how Democrats try to weasel out of this one.
