One Republican congressman believes that there is going to be a serious internal power struggle among House Democrats.
According to Breitbart, Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) has predicted that a non-violent “civil war” is about to take place in the House of Representatives in the coming weeks.
What’s going on?
House Democrats have lost seats, and the moderates are blaming the progressives. In fact, they did so to the progressives’ face during a post-election conference call that took place on Thursday. Rep. Abigail Spanberger, a moderate who just barely won her House race in Virginia, was among the most vocal.
“Defund the police almost cost me my race because of an attack ad. Don’t say socialism ever again…” she said, adding that if they run a race like this again in 2022, the House Democrats will be “torn apart.”
The progressives, however, have a different view of the election, and that’s probably because they themselves didn’t do too badly. Among others, representatives such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) all managed to hold on to their seats.
And, in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) words, “We did not win every battle but we did win the war.” She said this referring not only to the fact that the Democrats will retain a majority in the House but also to the fact that it seems as though Joe Biden is going to win the presidency.
Be that as it may, there are now competing factions in the House, which raises some questions, including whether Pelosi will maintain her speakership or whether someone else will be selected.
“They’re going to come with a fight”
Gosar made his prediction during an appearance Friday on AL’s FM Talk 106.5.
“[A]OC, Omar, Tlaib and Pressley are not the type of people that will back down,” he said. “They’re going to come with a fight, and that’s why I think there’s going to be a civil war that occurs over the next several weeks before the speakership race.”
Gosar went on to state that the result of this fight will be a change – a new speaker. He predicted that the person to take over for Pelosi will be House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC).
Clyburn is not exactly a moderate but he also isn’t exactly a member of the far left – he falls somewhere in between. And, according to Gosar, he could be selected Speaker in order to “mitigate the fiasco that is occurring within that Democratic Party.”
We’ll have to see if Gosar is right. But, considering the reports that are coming out in which it appears that neither moderates nor the far left are particularly happy with the current Speaker, it would be surprising if Pelosi were to still be at the helm come January.
