It’s official: former NFL star Hershel Walker is running for the U.S. Senate.
Walker filed the required paperwork with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Tuesday. And, Walker announced his candidacy on Wednesday after being encouraged to run, for months, by many, including former President Donald Trump.
“Our country is at a crossroads, and I can’t sit on the sidelines anymore,” Walker wrote.
“In the United States Senate, I will stand up for conservative values and get our country moving in the right direction,” he added. “It is time to have leaders in Washington who will fight to protect the American Dream for everybody.”
Walker will be competing for the U.S. Senate seat that is currently held by Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA). The reader will likely remember that Warnock, just this year, defeated former Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) in a special election that was held at the beginning of January.
Warnock, having won that special election, is finishing the term of former Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA), which is why Warnock will be up for re-election during the 2022 midterms after only serving about two years, rather than the usual six.
It is believed that Republicans can win this race, although Warnock is certainly no pushover candidate. Reports indicate that, at the moment, he has about $32 million in campaign funds on hand.
Besides Walker, Warnock is being challenged by a number of Republicans including Gary Black, Georgia’s agriculture commissioner, Kelvin King, an Air Force veteran, and Latham Saddler, a retired Navy SEAL.
A key endorsement?
It has to be stated that officially Trump has not endorsed Walker. But, one would expect, based on previous comments that he made, that it is only a matter of time before he does.
Here, for example, is what Trump said in March:
Wouldn’t it be fantastic if the legendary Herschel Walker ran for the United States Senate in Georgia? He would be unstoppable, just like he was when he played for the Georgia Bulldogs, and in the NFL. He is also a GREAT person. Run Herschel, run!
And, just in June, Trump opined that “Beating [Walker] would be very tough.”
So, it is likely that an endorsement from Trump is on the way, which, as we know, will be a big boost for Walker, significantly increasing his chances to get elected.
