New book reveals that Dr. Fauci resisted a key Trump order

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) head, Dr. Anthony Fauci, is back under fire.

Fox News reports that a new book reveals that Fauci initially resisted an order from the Trump administration to cancel a research grant for the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).

The WIV is where many now believe that the coronavirus pandemic began. We know that the lab was conducting research on bat viruses, but what remains unclear is whether controversial gain-of-function research was being conducted there. Fauci has maintained that, to his knowledge, it was not.

Fauci also has denied that U.S. taxpayer money went to sponsor gain-of-function research at the WIV.

The new book that is set to be released was written by the Washington Post’s Yasmeen Abutaleb and Damian Paletta. The book is called “Nightmare Scenario: Inside the Trump Administration’s Response to the Pandemic That Changed History.”

According to Abutaleb and Paletta, Fauci, in April of 2020, resisted an order from the Trump administration to cancel a grant to the WIV.

That grant was from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and it was for EcoHealth Alliance, which is a nonprofit organization that was conducting research on coronaviruses. It was toward this end that EcoHealth had worked with the WIV.

According to Abutaleb and Paletta, Fauci resisted the order to cancel the grant until he learned that the order came directly from then-President Donald Trump. At that point, Fauci is said to have “reluctantly agreed.”

Was Fauci lying?

A couple of months later, in June of 2020, Fauci testified before Congress that the grant was “canceled because the NIH was told to cancel it.” Fauci also claimed that he didn’t “know the reason” behind the cancellation, which is contrary to what the book claims.

Several lawmakers are now calling Fauci a liar. Among them is Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA).

“Dr. Fauci is so obsessed with maintaining his own relevance and downplaying President Trump’s role in combatting this crisis that he’s once again been caught lying,” Carter said.

Over the past month, there have been several calls for Fauci to be investigated, perhaps even criminally, for his role in handling the coronavirus pandemic, in general, and, more specifically, for his decision-making regarding the WIV. Thus far, however, such an investigation has not been launched.
