Remember the so-called squad? Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA)? The unfortunate fact is that these self-proclaimed Democrat-socialists will all be returning to the House of Representatives in January. But, the good news is that they will not return unopposed.
The New York Post reports that one congresswoman-elect is planning on setting up her own conservative squad that will look to “counterbalance” the “squad” of Ocasio-Cortez.
The “Freedom squad”
This is the name that congresswoman-elect Nicole Malliotakis, from New York, plans to give to her squad.
“New York City needs a two-party system,” Malliotakis said. “We need someone who is going to be a counterbalance to AOC.”
Malliotakis continued: “We need to form our own ‘squad.’ We have a group of new Republicans who love America. We value freedom, liberty, and opportunity.”
The congresswoman-elect said that, for now, she is planning to call her squad the “freedom squad,” but that the name, upon discussion, might change. She said that this “freedom squad” would stand for “a strong economy” and “less government.”
There is no doubt that Malliotakis is a fighter. In the next Congress, she will be the only Republican representing New York City in the House of Representatives.
She managed to defeat Rep. Max Rose, a first-term Democrat, in the race for New York’s 11th Congressional District, a district that includes Staten Island and southern Brooklyn.
For Malliotakis, the fight against such “Democrat-socialists” is a personal one. She is a Cuban American whose family fled the oppressive Cuban regime. “Our families fled from oppressive countries with the very same policies that AOC and the Squad are promoting,” Malliotakis explained.
It could be the case that joining Malliotakis’ “freedom squad” will be Cuban Americans Carlos Gimenez and Maria Elvira-Salazar, from Florida, and Ukrainian American Victoria Spartz, from Indiana. These women, all Republicans, will also be new members of the House this January, and, like Malliotakis, they too left Communist and socialist regimes to come to America. Surely, they understand freedom better than most and will want to protect it.
Democrats will hold onto their majority in the House this January, but it will be a much smaller majority. This, along with Malliotakis’ “freedom squad,” ought to be enough to hold the far-left in check.
