Breitbart reports that a group of progressive Democrats in the House of Representatives has put together a resolution that, instead of deporting criminal illegal aliens, would keep them in the United States.
Leading the way on this resolution is Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA). Co-sponsors include Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Judy Chu (D-CA), Jesus Garcia (D-IL), and Veronica Escobar (D-TX).
The group plans to make a big push to get this resolution passed in 2021.
The resolution itself was recently shared with Vox, which has reported on its main provisions. One, as stated, would lead to a cut back in deportations.
Currently, deportation is the main penalty for those illegals who break the law. Vox reports that “the resolution argues that judges should instead be able to impose scalable penalties based on the severity of the offense, such as fines, community service, treatment programs, or probationary periods.”
Another provision, according to Vox, “advocates for improving immigrants’ access to health care and housing and ‘eliminating barriers that deter immigrant communities from accessing crucial public services for which they are eligible.'”
Vox also reports that the resolution “asserts that the U.S. should embrace a ‘presumption of liberty for all immigrants,’ bringing an end to family detention and the controversial 287(g) program, under which local law enforcement can question people about their immigration status and detain them on immigration charges.”
Breitbart reports that, “in practice, the provision eliminates all detention of adult border crossers so long as they arrive with children and ends local law enforcement’s ability to partner with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency to ensure criminal illegal aliens are not released back into the communities they have victimized.”
We ought not to forget that Democrat Joe Biden, himself, has vowed to undo President Donald Trump’s immigration policies within his first 100 days in office, assuming those 100 days do come to pass.
Part of Biden’s plan would be to grant amnesty to all of the 11 to 22 million illegal aliens currently residing in the United States. Biden’s plan would end the travel ban that President Trump has placed on such counties as Libya, Syria, Venezuela, North Korea, and others, and it would reinstate DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy.
Both Biden’s and Jayapal’s immigration plans would be a massive overhaul to the United States’ immigration policies, resulting, more or less, in completely open borders. Whether or not such plans will have a chance at being implemented will depend on a number of factors, including, most importantly, which party is in control of the Senate.
If the Democrats win, then, with regard to immigration, we could be heading back to the pre-Trump days, or worse.
