A new poll suggests that the majority of Americans are against the teaching of Critical Race Theory to elementary school students.
The poll was conducted by Harvard CAPS/Harris from June 15th to June 17th. 2,006 registered voters participated. Participants were asked:
Do you believe that kids in elementary school should be taught that America is structurally racist and is dominated by white supremacy or should they not be taught this?
61 percent said that students “should not be taught this,” while 39 percent said that they should.
Participants were also asked whether these same elementary school students ought to be “taught about the first amendment and the importance of free speech.” 81 percent said that they should.
A winning issue
The Harvard CAPS/Harris poll may not have asked about Critical Race Theory by name, but it did by belief. As Breitbart explains, proponents of Critical Race Theory do believe that America is a racist country, and that’s what they teach.
There has indeed been a push recently to teach Critical Race Theory in schools. That push has been addressed by a number of Republican states that have enacted legislation that prevents this.
As this Harvard CAPS/Harris poll demonstrates, Critical Race Theory has become somewhat of a winning issue for Republicans. And, Republican politicians have sought to capitalize on this fact.
On Monday, for example, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) rebuked those Democrats who support Critical Race Theory, essentially accusing them of supporting racism.
“Democrats are desperate to pretend their party has progressed from their days of supporting slavery, pushing Jim Crow laws, and supporting the KKK,” McCarthy said. “But today, the Dem Party has simply replaced the racism of the Klan with the racism of Critical Race Theory.”
The numbers are clear
The results of the recent Harvard CAPS/Harris poll have been supported by the findings of at least one other poll, Breitbart reports. That poll was conducted by YouGov/Economist, and the results were published in mid-June.
The pollster found that 58 percent of Americans have an “unfavorable” view of Critical Race Theory, whereas 38 percent had a “favorable” one.
55 percent said that teaching Critical Race Theory is “bad for America,” 37 percent said that it is “good for America,” and 8 percent said, “neither good nor bad.”
