A new poll claims that the majority of Americans are in favor of having the government issue a mandate requiring people to get vaccinated against the coronavirus, Breitbart reports.
The poll comes from the COVID-19 Consortium for Understanding the Public’s Policy Preferences Across States. It was conducted between June 9 and July 7, 2021, and 20,669 people participated.
What the poll found was that 64 percent of participants indicated that they are in favor of “requiring everyone to get a COVID-19 vaccine.” The poll also found that a majority – 61 percent – were in favor of requiring K-12 students to get vaccinated against the coronavirus before being allowed to return to school, and the corresponding number for college students was 66 percent.
The pollster found that only Republicans were against such ideas. Only 45 percent of Republicans, for example, supported a universal vaccine mandate.
The trend definitely appears to be towards coronavirus vaccine mandates.
In terms of the government, so far, we have seen the federal government issue a vaccine mandate for federal workers, although these workers have the option to undergo regular coronavirus testing instead. A similar step is being taken by some state governments, such a California.
What we have not seen, however, at least not yet, is the government try to mandate vaccines for non-employee citizens. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), did seem to suggest that the government was considering such a mandate last week. But, after making the suggestion, she quickly retracted it.
Instead, what the government – both the federal and state governments – has been doing is encouraging private entities to require consumers, employees, students, and the like, to prove that they have been vaccinated against the coronavirus. Many private entities are doing just that.
This is all from the Democratic side of things. However, where Republicans are in charge, such as in Florida and Texas, steps are being taken to ensure that such things as vaccine mandates or mask mandates never become a reality.
A preview of things to come?
As America slowly moves toward government-issued vaccine mandates, other countries have already taken the plunge. Two examples are France and Italy. Both countries have passed legislation requiring citizens to prove vaccination against the coronavirus when entering a building.
Both countries, as a result, have seen a backlash. In France, that backlash came in the form of a protest of some 150,000 citizens. In Italy, the backlash took place in parliament.
The question is what would Americans do if the government took such steps here? We may soon find out.
