Reuters reports that President Joe Biden has enacted a ban on travel from India.
In doing so, Reuters inadvertently exposed Biden’s hypocrisy. But, more on this later.
The travel ban
India is currently experiencing a sharp rise in coronavirus cases. Reports indicate that the country has been averaging about 350,000 new COVID-19 cases per day and that, on Friday, the country saw 386,000 new cases, which was a new record.
Biden put the ban into effect on Friday. He is reported to have signed the ban on the advice of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A White House official has said that it is the result of “high COVID-19 caseloads and multiple variants circulating in India.”
What the ban does is prevent foreign nationals who have passed through India in the past two weeks from traveling to America. It goes into effect on Tuesday, May 4th.
Considering the situation in India, it is not that surprising that Biden has opted for a ban restricting travel from India. It’s probably a good idea.
But, what makes this travel ban so surprising is that it wasn’t too long ago that Biden referred to similar travel bans from former President Donald Trump as “xenophobic.”
As Breitbart reports, back in 2020, Trump did the same thing that Biden is doing: he enacted several travel bans in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus into the United States.
At the time, Biden was one of the biggest critics of the idea.
In one Twitter post, from March 2020, Biden wrote: “A wall will not stop the coronavirus. Banning all travel from Europe — or any other part of the world — will not stop it. This disease could impact every nation and any person on the planet — and we need a plan to combat it.”
And, about a month earlier, Biden tweeted that “we need to lead the way with science — not Donald Trump’s record of hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering.”
We, of course, won’t hold our breath waiting for Biden or anyone else in his administration to explain why travel bans are now acceptable. We don’t need an explanation anyway. It’s just the usual Democrat hypocrisy.
