President Joe Biden is moving forward with another coronavirus vaccine mandate, albeit an indirect one.
The Associated Press reports that this latest vaccine mandate is for nursing home workers.
“President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced that his administration will require that nursing home staff be vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition for those facilities to continue receiving federal Medicare and Medicaid funding,” the outlet reports.
According to the Associated Press, at some point in the near future, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is expected to announce the requirement that nursing home staff members get vaccinated. It is expected that this will all be put into effect by next month.
And, it does appear that order is significant because, according to the Associated Press, a large number of nursing home employees are, in fact, not already vaccinated.
“Hundreds of thousands of nursing home workers are not vaccinated, according to federal data, despite those facilities bearing the brunt of the early COVID-19 outbreak and their workers being among the first in the country to be eligible for shots,” the outlet reports.
Abusing the power of the purse
What this amounts to is Biden is using the power of the purse to issue a coronavirus vaccine mandate that he doesn’t directly have the power to implement. A couple of weeks ago the Washington Post put out a report indicating that this was a possibility.
The outlet reported, “the effort could apply to institutions as varied as long-term-care facilities, cruise ships, and universities, potentially impacting millions of Americans, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive conversations.”
So, we can now put a check next to “long-term-care facilities.” The question now is “who’s next?”
Despite claiming that he wouldn’t, Biden has slowly been heading in the direction of more and more coronavirus vaccine mandates. It started with the mandate for federal workers, requiring them to either get vaccinated or to undergo coronavirus testing. More recently, it was announced that the U.S. military will be required to get vaccinated.
But, there are a series of other mandates that the Biden administration is reportedly considering, including vaccine mandates for interstate travel and for visitors to the United States. And, again, this is on top of the Biden administration using the power of the purse to pressure other entities into requiring vaccination.
So, in typical fashion, Biden is doing exactly what he said he wouldn’t, forcing coronavirus vaccines on Americans.
