Yet another California Democrat is heading to the Biden administration. This time not only is it a California Democrat but a failed California Democrat.
Breitbart reports that President Joe Biden has nominated former Democrat Rep. Gil Cisneros (D-CA) to a Department of Defense (DOD) post.
Cisneros’s nomination comes after he just lost his reelection race in the 2020 election. In the race for California’s 39th congressional district, Cisneros lost to Rep. Young Kim (R-CA) by just over 4,000 votes.
Cisneros had only spent one term in Congress, having just gained this 39th District House seat in 2018.
The Biden administration announced Cisneros’s nomination on Monday. Cisneros has specifically been nominated for the under secretary of defense, personnel, and readiness position within the DOD.
According to the DOD website: “The Under Secretary for Personnel and Readiness is the principal staff assistant and advisor to the Secretary of Defense for force readiness; force management; health affairs; National Guard and Reserve component affairs; education and training; and military and civilian personnel requirements and management, including equal opportunity, morale, welfare, recreation, and quality of life matters.”
The White House, in its statement, gave a run-down on Cisneros.
“As a Congressman representing CA – 39, Cisneros served on both the Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs Committees, and was a strong advocate, for our veterans, service members, and our military families,” the statement reads. “He fought to address the issue of mental health and suicide amongst both our veterans and service members.”
The statement continues:
After the death of Spc. Venessa Guillén, he was invited to participate in discussions about the status of Latinos in the Army and helped to introduce the I Am Vanessa Guillén Act to make sexual harassment a crime within the Uniform Code of Military Justice. He has been an advocate for military families on issues of housing, child abuse, and exceptional family members. He is committed to building a diverse military, and removing extremism from our ranks.
All of this is good news for Cisneros, but it is bad news for House Democrats.
The hope of the Democratic Party’s leadership was that Cisneros would run again in the next election to regain the 39th District for them.
Now, the Democratic Party appears as though it will need to find a new candidate to compete for this seat.
