The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion coronavirus bill on Wednesday.
Now, according to Breitbart, the Biden administration is talking about working to make some of the provisions in the coronavirus bill “permanent.”
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki made this revelation during an appearance on “CNN Tonight” Wednesday.
There, host Don Lemon asked: “There’s provisions [in the $1.9 trillion bill] like expanding the child tax credit and increased subsidies for health insurance. Those expire, though, after a year, Jen. How much of President Biden’s sales pitch next week will be about convincing Americans that these social safety net measures should be permanent?”
Here, Lemon was talking about a trip that Biden will make next week that NBC News is calling a “nationwide victory lap” following the passage of the $1.9 trillion bill.
“Well, a big part,” Psaki said in response to Lemon’s question. “[Biden] wants to make the child tax credit permanent. He’s talked about that, and certainly, he’ll look for opportunities to do that and to work with members of Congress to get that done. And, he certainly wants to make health care more affordable and accessible.”
Psaki emphasized that the main point of Biden’s trip is to talk about the $1.9 trillion bill that was passed.
“But I promise you,” she added, “he sees the benefits of the child tax credit, and knows that’s a way that we’re going to address the crisis that is the percentage of women, the number of women who have dropped out of the workforce. So, he’ll look for opportunities to talk about that too.”
On Wednesday, the House pushed through the $1.9 trillion package that was passed by the Senate last week. All House Republicans and one House Democrat – Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) – voted against the bill. Now, all that is left is for President Biden to sign the bill into law, which is expected to happen before the weekend.
Biden and the Democrats have been celebrating the passage of the bill, which Psaki has called “the most progressive bill in American history.” The White House has released a statement calling House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) “the finest and most capable speaker in the history of our nation.”
Republicans, however, have condemned the bill as a “liberal wishlist.” As Breitbart reports, “The COVID relief bill includes billions of dollars in unrelated spending, including bailouts for pensions and for Democrat-run city and state governments. It also expands welfare programs dramatically beyond the immediate impact of the pandemic.”
And, it looks like if Biden and the Democrats have their way, they will make some of these welfare provisions permanent.
