Breitbart reports that President Joe Biden is overriding former President Donald Trump’s executive privilege claim regarding documents sought by the Democrat-led House committee that is investigating the January 6th Capitol riot.
The documents that the committee is trying to get its hands on are currently sitting in the National Archives. For some time now, Trump and his attornies have made it clear that Trump intends to invoke executive privilege in an attempt to keep the documents from the committee.
Biden, however, has suggested that he will cooperate with the committee, including by handing the documents over. And, now, this is exactly what he is doing.
“Executive privilege is not warranted”
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki revealed to reporters on Friday that Biden will be handing the documents over to the House committee.
“The president is dedicated to ensuring that something like that could never happen again, which is why the administration is cooperating with ongoing investigations, including the January 6 select committee to bring to light what happened,” Psaki said. “As a part of this process, the president has determined that an assertion of executive privilege is not warranted for the first set of documents from the Trump White House that have been provided to us by the National Archives.”
Psaki went on to say that this is all part of “an ongoing process,” and that, so far, she is only talking about “the first set of documents.” She said that the White House, for future sets of documents, will determine “on a case-by-case basis” whether executive privilege is warranted.
Psaki, during the briefing, was asked whether this decision was a political one, considering that Trump may very well face off against Biden in 2024. Psaki, though, vehemently denied this.
“There’s nothing political about working to ensure the events of Jan. 6 never happen again,” she said.
The official response
Psaki was commenting on an exchange that took place between Trump’s attornies and the National Archives.
Trump’s attornies had written a letter to the archives that, in part, read:
I write concerning requests for documents and records sent to your office on March 25, 2021 and August 25, 2021 by the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. The Committee requested an extremely broad set of documents and records, potentially numbering in the millions, which unquestionably contain information protected from disclosure by the executive and other privileges, including but not limited to the presidential communications, deliberative process, and attorney-client privileges.
The National Archives responded:
President Biden has determined that an assertion of executive privilege is not in the best interests of the United States, and therefore is not justified as to any of the documents.
So, it’s official: the White House and January 6th House committee are teaming up against Trump. It just goes to show how much of a threat Trump poses to the left’s political ambitions. Expect the committee to conclude its “investigation” come election time.
