The Democrats, according to Breitbart, are about to make a “last-ditch” attempt to get the “For the People Act” through Congress, and, according to Rolling Stone, President Joe Biden is ready to play a key role in that effort.
The so-called For the People Act is also known as H.R. 1. It is the Democrats’ election overhaul bill, which, as Breitbart notes, would “effectively nationalize elections and enable voter fraud.”
Thus far, the Democrats have not been able to make real progress with the bill, and part of the reason for this is the current makeup of the Senate, which is either 50 to 50 or 51 to 50 if Vice President Kamala Harris’s tie-breaking vote is included.
The other main part of the reason is the Senate filibuster, which makes it so that 60 votes are required to pass a piece of legislation. This is where Biden comes in.
Biden’s “ready to push”
According to Rolling Stone’s new report, Biden is ready to work on Senators in order to get them to support changing or eliminating the filibuster for the purpose of passing the “For the People Act.”
“According to three people briefed on the White House’s position and its recent communications with outside groups, Biden assured Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that he was ready to push for filibuster reform,” the outlet reports.
Rolling Stone goes on to quote one insider as saying that Biden told Schumer, “you tell me when you need me to start making phone calls.”
The outlet also claims that, in July, Biden told Schumer and Pelosi that he would “get involved himself and lobby the handful of moderate Democrats to convince them to weaken the filibuster so that the For the People Act could pass without any Republican votes.”
At the time, Biden, the outlet reports, said that he wouldn’t take this step until Pelosi and Schumer “tried every option they had” to pass the bill. Since then, Rolling Stone says that the White House has “devoted more staff to the issue.”
“The handful of moderate Democrats”
Rolling Stone reports that among Biden’s “likely targets” are Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ). Both are considered moderate Democrats, and both have made it clear that they are against changing or abolishing the filibuster.
If Biden and the Democrats are going to eliminate or change the filibuster, then they would have to have both Manchin and Sinema on board. As stated at the outset, even one Democrat voting against the idea is enough to derail it.
The Senate is reconvening this week, after its recent recess. The “For the People Act” is reported to be among Majority Leader Schumer’s top priorities.
