According to reports, the Taliban is now taking the passports of Afghan Americans as these individuals attempt to flee Afghanistan.
This is part of the situation that is taking place at the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. This is the airport that has become the center of attention as the U.S. and its allies try to evacuate people stuck behind enemy lines in Afghanistan.
The Taliban, of course, is making the situation more difficult at the airport. And, in this regard, the seizing of passports is one tactic that they are using.
One man’s story
The New York Post has provided further insight into the situation with a first-hand account of what is going on. It was about an Afghan American’s narrow escape from the Taliban.
“I got to the gates and was about to show my passport, but the Taliban got it, and he said you are not allowed to go through and wouldn’t give it back,” the man said.
It turned out, though, that this particular man got lucky. He told the Post that a U.S. marine was right there as the situation took place and that this marine forced the Taliban member to give the passport back to him.
So, this individual got lucky. But, the question is how many people are not getting lucky? How many people’s passports and other forms of identification have already been seized by the Taliban?
We, of course, do not know the answer to these questions. But, we do know that passports and other forms of identification are being seized by the Taliban, among other reasons, to stop people from leaving the country.
This all comes after President Joe Biden on Friday claimed that to the “best of our knowledge – Taliban checkpoints – they are letting through people showing American passports.”
Now, we know that the Taliban not only isn’t letting people through, but it is taking their identification. And, this isn’t even the worse of it. The worst is the violence.
Shortly after Biden’s press conference, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin revealed that the Taliban has used violence on Americans stuck in Afghanistan. It is being reported that the Taliban has been using violence and gunfire to stop people from getting to the Kabul airport.
With tens of thousands of American citizens still stuck in Afghanistan, someone needs to get this situation under control.
