A criminal investigation may be in Dr. Anthony Fauci’s future.
Breitbart reports Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) as declaring that will ask the Department of Justice (DOJ) to launch a criminal investigation into Fauci for lying to Congress.
“He should be punished”
Paul made the announcement during an interview that he did on the Fox News Channel’s “Hannity” on Tuesday. There, he was asked by host Sean Hannity whether it is his belief that Fauci “lied before Congress and broke the law.”
“Yes, and I will be sending a letter to the Department of Justice asking for a criminal referral because he has lied to Congress,” Paul said. “We have scientists that were lined up by the dozens to say that the research [Fuaci] was funding was gain-of-function.”
Paul continued by accusing Fauci of trying to hide this fact “because he has a self-interest to cover his tracks and to cover his connection to Wuhan lab.”
Paul added that it is not his belief that Fauci deserves “all the blame.” But, Paul said that Fauci is “lying about whether or not he funded gain-of-function research, and yes, he should be punished.”
This interview that Paul did with Hannity followed a heated exchange that took place between himself and Fauci on Tuesday during a Senate hearing. There, Paul accused Fauci of lying about whether he funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), which is where many now believe that the coronavirus pandemic began.
“Dr. Fauci, knowing that it is a crime to lie to Congress, do you wish to retract your statement of May 11th, where you claimed that the NIH never funded gains of function research in Wuhan,” Paul asked Fauci. Paul asked Fauci this after quoting Dr. Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University, who stated that the bat coronavirus research that was being conducted “epitomizes the definition of gain-of-function research.”
Fauci replied, “I have never lied before the Congress, and I do not retract that statement.” Fauci also said to Paul, “You do not know what you are talking about quite frankly and I want to say that officially.”
Paul responded by accused Fauci of “dancing around” the definition of gain-of-function research in an effort “to obscure responsibility for 4 million people dying around the world from a pandemic.”
The official position of Fauci is that he, as head of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), did fund research into bat viruses, but that he never funded gain-of-function research into such viruses. This is important because gain-of-function research could be to blame for the coronavirus pandemic, and the U.S. government, including Fauci, could have been sending U.S. taxpayer money to fund that research.
Fauci has yet to respond to Paul’s latest statement, that he will refer Fauci to the DOJ for a criminal investigation.
