Evidently, the honeymoon period of President Joe Biden has come to an end.
Biden has just received his third negative poll in the past week, and this latest one, according to ABC News, shows that, with Biden leading the way, Americans have grown significantly less optimistic about the future of the country.
The poll was conducted by Ipsos, in conjunction with ABC News, from July 23rd to July 24th. The sample, which is said to be “a nationally representative probability sample,” consisted of 527 adult Americans.
The pollster found that only 45 percent of Americans are optimistic about the prospects of the country over the next year. And, on the flip side, it found that 55 percent of Americans are pessimistic about those prospects.
These numbers represent a significant change in Americans’ optimism since the last time this poll was taken, which was in late April/early May, near the 100-day mark of Biden’s presidency. At the time, Americans were 19 percent more optimistic, or less pessimistic, depending on the way that you want to look at it.
And, the pollster found that this dropoff in optimism “is happening across all age groups, income levels, educational attainment, and partisan affiliation.”
In terms of partisan affiliation, for example, optimism is down about 20 percentage points among both Democrats and Republicans and 26 percentage points among independents.
Perhaps the most significant percentage here is from the Democrats. Their optimism has gone from 93 percent to 71 percent over the past two and a half months. That’s telling.
More bad numbers for Joe
Just before ABC News/Ipsos released this poll, Gallup released a poll of its own, and its poll showed that President Biden is currently experiencing his lowest approval rating since becoming president.
According to the pollster, Biden’s approval rating is currently 50 percent, which, besides being the lowest approval rating of his presidency, is a 6 percentage point dropoff from June and a 7 percentage point dropoff from his peak approval rating of 57 percent.
So, overall, it is clear that Biden and his administration are trending in the wrong direction.
As for what is causing this trend, well, take your pick. Polls consistently indicate that the majority of Americans approve of Biden’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. But, there are other hot-button issues that Biden consistently does poorly with, including immigration and crime, to name two big ones.
