Republicans are fighting back against the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) new facemask recommendation and the Biden administration’s capitulation, and leading the way is former President Donald Trump.
Trump, on Tuesday, released a statement in response to the CDC’s new recommendations.
“We won’t go back. We won’t mask our children,” Trump wrote. “(President) Joe Biden and his administration learned nothing from the last year.”
“Brave Americans learned how to safely and responsibly live and fight back,” Trump continued. “Don’t surrender to COVID. Don’t go back! Why do Democrats distrust the science? Don’t let this happen to our children or our country.”
The CDC, on Tuesday, recommended that Americans, including vaccinated Americans, in areas of high coronavirus transmissibility wear facemasks indoors. The agency also recommended that all K-12 students wear facemasks.
According to the agency, the need for this recommendation comes from the surging Delta variant of the coronavirus coupled with a less than ideal vaccination rate here in America. Some, including White House Chief Medical Adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci, have openly stated their belief that the mask recommendation will incentivize more people to get vaccinated.
The Biden administration has indicated that it plans to follow the CDC’s new guidance.
Trump was far from the only Republican to slam the Biden administration for this mask update. Another 2024 Republican frontrunner, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), joined him.
“It isn’t based in science,” DeSantis said. “There is no indication that areas with mask mandates have performed any better than areas without mask mandates. In fact, this policy could actually backfire. Mandating masks for vaccinated people erodes public trust and confidence in the effectiveness of the vaccines.”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), made a similar statement, but added: “Make no mistake — the threat of bringing masks back is not a decision based on science, but a decision conjured up by liberal government officials who want to continue to live in a perpetual pandemic state.”
Along the same lines, the Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson opined, “This is about politics and social control. The Biden Administration has decided it owns your body. The media agree with that. If the rest of us allow that grotesque claim to go unchallenged, we’re in deep trouble going forward, for generations, long after COVID recedes, and it will at some point.”
Accordingly, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), according to Breitbart, is urging Americans to take back the liberty that was taken from them during the coronavirus. We’ll have to see if Americans take Johnson’s advice.
