With President-elect Joe Biden about to take office, there appears to be a major shift taking place in the coronavirus narrative.
This past week, Newsweek published a study that found that mandatory lockdowns are no more effective than voluntary measures.
According to Newsweek, the peer-reviewed study was published in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation on January 5th.
What researchers at the University of Stanford did was compared countries that implemented mandatory lockdowns – including England, Germany, Spain, Iran, Italy, Netherlands, France, and the United States – with countries that did not implement such lockdowns – namely, South Korea and Sweden.
What the researchers found was that there was “no clear, significant beneficial effect of [more restrictive measures] on case growth in any country.”
The researchers hastened to add that “we do not question the role of all public health interventions, or of coordinated communications about the epidemic, but we fail to find an additional benefit of stay-at-home orders and business closures.”
It’s almost too good to be true
Not long after the release of this study, two of America’s most ardent lockdown supporters actually appeared to have a change of heart.
“We simply cannot stay closed until the vaccine hits critical mass,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) tweeted this week. “The cost is too high. We will have nothing left to open. we must reopen the economy, but we must do it smartly and safely.”
Similarly, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is reported as saying that restaurants and bars need to be allowed to reopen “as quickly as possible.”
Biden’s latest plan
While all this was going on, Biden revealed his “American Rescue Plan,” a $1.9 trillion dollar coronavirus relief package that includes direct cash payments of $1,400, extended unemployment, rent relief, food assistance, aid to small businesses, and the keeping of essential frontline workers on the job. Biden is also pushing for a mask mandate and for an improved vaccination rate.
Many have argued that the coronavirus was used as a political weapon against President Donald Trump. That has been made clear by the narrative that has been pushed over the past year. Just as clear is how this narrative is going to end: with Joe Biden as America’s savior.
To some extent, you have to give the Democrats credit. If Republicans were this good at politics, then we probably wouldn’t be sitting on the sidelines for at least the next two years. The only question now is whether America is going to accept this conclusion to the left’s coronavirus narrative. We’ll see.
