Man dies after crashing into White House security barrier

Over the weekend, an individual died after crashing into the White House's outer perimeter security gate. 

The incident, according to the Associate Press, took place on Saturday evening, around 10:30 p.m.

The location of the crash was the security barrier at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue NW and 15th Street.

The driver of the vehicle, at the time of this writing, has still not been identified. It is unclear if and when such an identification will be made public.

The Secret Service responds

The Secret Service is among those who responded to the incident. Early in the morning on Sunday, it provided an update on what had happened via its X account.

"Shortly before 10:30p.m. on May 4th, a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed collided with an outer perimeter gate on the White House complex. Security protocols were implemented as officers cleared the vehicle and attempted to render aid to the driver who was discovered deceased," the Secret Service wrote.

It added, "There was no threat to the White House. The fatal crash portion of this will be turn over to the Washington Metropolitan Police Department Crash Investigation Unit and the Secret Service investigation continues."

More details provided by D.C. police

The Washington D.C. Police Department has released its own statement on the matter on its X account.

"Incident: At 10:46pm MPD was called to the intersection of 15th Street and Pennsylvania Ave NW for reports of a crash. One adult male was pronounced dead on scene," the department wrote.

It added, "The vehicle crashed into a security barrier around the White House complex. At this time, the incident is being investigated only as a traffic crash by MPD’s Major Crash Investigations Unit."
