Kamala Harris taking sides against Israel amid speculation she may replace Biden as Dem nominee

The speculation that Kamala Harris could replace President Joe Biden as the Democrat presidential nominee continues to be intense, and Harris seems to be carefully positioning herself to get the support of anti-Israel protesters if that scenario becomes real.

In an interview with The Nation magazine on Monday, Harris refused to condemn the protesters, in so many words saying they are right because they feel empathy for Gaza.

"They are showing exactly what the human emotion should be, as a response to Gaza," Harris said in the article, which had a larger focus on the possibility of Harris replacing Biden in the presidential race. "There are things some of the protesters are saying that I absolutely reject, so I don’t mean to wholesale endorse their points. But we have to navigate it. I understand the emotion behind it."

It has been difficult for Democrats to navigate a need to support Israel while a large number in their party have grown to view Israel as an oppressor of Gaza who might deserve the devastation visited on them by Hamas terrorists.

Outrageous position

While that position seems outrageous to those who know what actually happened, TikTok and other sources have made it seem like reality to those far from the carnage.

Harris said she has thought and asked about what the people of Gaza are eating and whether the women have sanitary pads amid Israel's bombardment of the region, where Hamas terrorists are hiding and often using civilians as human shields.

"I like to cook. So I said to my team, 'You can’t make s--- with flour if you don’t have clean water.' So what’s going on with that? I ask questions like, ‘What are people actually eating right now? I’m hearing stories about their eating animal feed, grass’ … so that’s how I think about it," she said.

"Similarly, I was asking early on, what are women in Gaza doing about sanitary hygiene," she continued. "Do they have pads? And these are the issues that made people feel uncomfortable, especially sanitary pads."

Propaganda

Hamas has spread propaganda that Israel has continued to oppress Gaza, when in reality Israel has allowed Gaza to be self-governing for years.

It was the people of Gaza that elected Hamas as their government, and it was Hamas that led an unprovoked attack on Israel in October that brought on the current hostilities as Israel tries to make sure Hamas is eradicated and can't kill its people on a massive scale ever again.

Harris doesn't really care about any of that, she just knows that supporting Israel without conditions and qualifications is costing Democrats a small but important segment of its political support.

Furthermore, Harris is unpopular and will need every vote she can possibly get in order to be elected in November, if she and her party can get Biden to step down.

Biden himself will also need every vote he can get if he doesn't step down.

But right now Harris's position on Israel will be hypothetical, at least more so than the president's, which gives her a little more leeway to make it look like she agrees with the protesters.
