Democrats are going through the stages of grief as they grapple with the sudden implosion of Joe Biden's re-election bid.

A Capitol Hill meeting to discuss Biden's future on Tuesday was compared to a "funeral" by insiders, as Biden doubled down on staying in the race despite calls for him to step aside.

It wasn't the kind of meeting Democrats wanted or expected to be having four months before a presidential election.

But Democrats haven't stopped panicking ever since Biden's debate debacle unmasked his cognitive decline in front of the nation.

"Funeral" over Biden

Biden sought to squelch dissent Monday, sending a feisty letter to Hill Democrats as they returned from their July 4th recess.

So far, there have been few signs of a concerted push by Hill Democrats to get rid of Biden, and he has received robust support from the Congressional Black Caucus and from the so-called "Squad" of progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

Some top Democrats who expressed doubt about Biden, like Jerry Nadler (D-NY), have changed tune since Biden went on offense this week.

But if Biden appears to have quashed much of the dissent in his party, he has not been able to lift spirits.

An anonymous House Democrat who backs Biden told Punchbowl News that a meeting to discuss Biden's future Tuesday "felt like a funeral." Democrats left the meeting without forming any consensus on how to move forward.

Dems paralyzed with indecision

The pressure on Biden has been strong from elite liberal media like the New York Times and from allies of his former boss, Barack Obama.

Biden has blamed his alarming debate performance on a cold, on exhaustion from travel, and on Trump "distracting" him.

In a major development, Nancy Pelosi, the retired former Speaker who many Democrats still defer to, said Wednesday that Biden should think twice about running.

“I want him to do whatever he decides to do,” Pelosi said on Morning Joe. “We’re all encouraging him to make that decision, because time is running short.”

While Democrats are seemingly gripped with indecision, the party's convention is fast approaching in August, only adding to their anxiety.

Trump has been quietly relishing the chaos unfolding on the other side, as polls show Biden taking a serious hit in battleground states.
