Pelosi sparks controversy with non-committal remarks about supporting Biden's continued candidacy

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) sparked controversy on Wednesday when she appeared to dodge giving a direct answer to a question about whether President Joe Biden should continue his run for re-election.

Asked multiple times during an MSNBC appearance if she supported Biden's continued candidacy, Pelosi repeatedly insisted that it was up to Biden and him alone to decide what he should do, according to the Daily Mail.

Pelosi's refusal to directly commit to supporting Biden's bid for a second term and repeated call for him to make a decision is stark given that just two days earlier, Biden sent a letter to Capitol Hill Democrats informing them that he had decided to remain in the presidential race.

"It's up to the president to decide if he's going to run"

Former Speaker Pelosi appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Wednesday and was asked by a co-host if President Biden had her support to remain at the head of the Democratic ticket, to which she replied, "It's up to the president to decide if he's going to run. We're all encouraging him to make that decision because time is running out."

It was pointed out that Biden had already decided to remain in the race and Pelosi was asked again directly if she, personally, wanted him to keep running. Pelosi dodged the question, however, and responded, "I want him to do whatever he decides to do. And that's the way it is. Whatever he decides we go with."

She went on to reference the upcoming NATO conference that Biden would be hosting and added, "I've said to everyone, let's just hold off -- whatever you're thinking, either tell somebody privately but you don't have to put that out on the table until we see how we go this week."

Biden informs Dems that he will remain in the race

As was noted by the MSNBC co-host, Politico reported on Monday that President Biden sent a letter to Democratic lawmakers to inform them that "despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump."

He said he'd had "extensive conversations" with party leaders, members, and voters and had "heard the concerns" they have about him, to which he now stated, "clearly and unequivocally: I wouldn’t be running again if I did not absolutely believe I was the best person to defeat Donald Trump in 2024."

Biden further referenced the Democratic primary elections earlier this year and wrote, "Do we now just say this process didn't matter? That the voters don't have a say? I decline to do that.

He then launched a series of predictable and dishonest attacks against former President Donald Trump and "MAGA Republicans" and concluded of the discussions about his continued candidacy that "it's time for it to end," as "Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us. It’s time to come together, move forward as a unified party, and defeat Donald Trump."

House Dems urge Pelosi to pressure Biden to drop out

Later on Wednesday, ABC News reporter Rachel Scott caught former Speaker Pelosi in the halls of Congress and attempted to seek clarification about her earlier remarks and whether she supported President Biden's continued run for the presidency, but the congresswoman repeatedly refused to discuss what she had said.

"I'm not making any comments in the hallway about the fate of our nation," Pelosi said at one point but then expressed her belief that Biden "can win" in November. However, upon further questioning from the reporter, Pelosi grew visibly irritated, stopped in her tracks, and said testily, "I'm not -- am I speaking English to you? I’m not going to be making any statements about any of that right now in the hallway."

Meanwhile, Axios reported on Thursday that a growing number of House Democrats are privately pressuring Pelosi to "strong-arm" Biden into agreeing to drop out of the race, with one anonymous lawmaker telling the outlet, "She's the f--king power-broker. She's the hatchet."

Another unnamed Democratic lawmaker told the outlet that more elected officials would soon come out publicly against Biden and revealed, "I told my comms team, have our statement ready to go next time he has a big f--k-up, because you know there's going to be another one," and added that if Biden's NATO press conference was a "debacle" that "you might see a whole new wave" of open calls for Biden's removal as the presumptive nominee.
