Wisconsin makes big election law changes after Supreme Court ruling
Wisconsin has just made a major change to its election laws - the same laws that will be used in the upcoming 2024 general election.
The New York Post reports that, much to the dismay of former President Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans, state election officials have put forth the rules for the use of drop boxes.
"Unelected state election officials approved unenforceable rules Thursday for the administration of unmanned ballot drop boxes for the November election. More than 1,800 local election clerks will determine whether and how to use such boxes," the outlet reports.
This all comes after a major decision by the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Background
A little over a week ago, the country witnessed just how important the April 2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court election was.
The race garnered national attention, because it would determine whether the court would be controlled by liberals or conservatives. As we now know, Janet Protasiewicz won the race, giving the court a 4 to 3 liberal majority.
On Friday, July 5, 2024, Wisconsin liberals obtained a big win when the state supreme court used its liberal majority to overrule an earlier decision from the court that significantly limited the use of drop boxes in elections.
The Associated Press reported:
The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled . . . that officials can place ballot drop boxes around their communities in this fall's elections, overturning its own ruling two years ago limiting their use in the presidential swing state.
The outlet noted that this gives "great discretion," regarding the use of the drop boxes, to local election officials - who, as the Post points out, are unelected.
The latest
Now, the Wisconsin election officials are working out the rules for the use of these drop boxes in the upcoming election.
"Commissioners disagreed on some of the finer points of the new rules," the Post reports.
It adds, "The commissioners debated rules for how the drop boxes should be emptied and when and disagreed over whether to include chain-of-custody language."
As the reader will likely remember, the use of drop boxes in the 2020 elections was extremely controversial. And, it continues to be controversial through the present day.
Wisconsin is expected to be a significant battleground state in the 2024 elections, just as it was in the 2020 elections. There, President Joe Biden was declared the winner by a margin of less than one percentage point, or less than 20,000 votes. We'll have to see if drop boxes, once again, come to the Democrats' aid this November.
