Democrats take aim at conservatives on the Supreme Court

Congressional Democrats are taking aim at the U.S. Supreme Court - specifically at conservative members of the court.

Among other things, Fox News reports that one Democratic member of the U.S. Senate is trying to seemingly defund the court.

The congressman is U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD). He is the chairman of the Senate's Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government.

Van Hollen's proposal would essentially cut off funding until the court implements an enforceable ethics code.

Van Hollen's big idea

This, of course, follows recent controversies regarding conservative Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.

"Renewed calls from Democrats for an ethics code to be enforced for justices of the Supreme Court stacked up last year following a report that detailed Thomas' friendship with billionaire real estate tycoon Harlan Crow and some of the lavish gifts he'd received from him," Fox reports.

It adds, "The effort gained steam again this summer after reports earlier in the year about an upside-down American flag and an 'Appeal to Heaven' flag that were flown at Alito's homes. Some claimed the upside-down American flag was a sign of support for those who rioted at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. However, Alito said the flag was flown by his wife in a dispute with a neighbor."

As a result, congressional Democrats, in particular, have been calling for the court to implement an ethics code.

Van Hollen's proposal would defund the court - except the court's money for protection - unless such a code is implemented. It is unclear how much support there is in Congress for such a measure.

There's more

Congressional Democrats have been pursuing other routes to get at the court's conservative justices as well.

Newsweek, for example, reports that Thomas is facing impeachment calls as well as calls for him to be investigated by the government.

Per the outlet:

Thomas was hit with articles of impeachment by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, on Wednesday after Democratic Senators Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Ron Wyden of Oregon asked the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to launch an investigation into alleged violations of Thomas.

Thomas, who is known for being one of the court's quietest members, has not released a statement on the matter - Although, he and Alito have both previously released public statements defending their actions.

So far, it does not appear as though the left's attempt to get these conservative justices has gained any real momentum.
