Republicans urge Biden to resign
Republicans are demanding that Joe Biden resign from office after he all but admitted that he is no longer fit to serve.
Biden announced he would forgo re-election on Sunday, a shocking decision that came after years of speculation on the right that he was in cognitive decline.
"If Joe Biden is not fit to run for president, he is not fit to serve as president," said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
"He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough," he added.
Did Biden ADMIT he's no longer fit?
Democrats had defended Biden as fit for duty throughout most of his presidency, but that all changed in June when he gave an incoherent debate performance on CNN.
Biden initially resisted calls to step aside, but finally broke down after mounting pressure from Democrats and the liberal media.
A little more than three weeks after the debate, Biden shared the shocking news that he would not run again. The statement included no hint of a forthcoming resignation. Nor did Biden acknowledge the widespread speculation about his health.
Instead, Biden said he would "focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term."
Instead of sharing the news in a traditional public setting, Biden announced his decision through a letter shared online.
Biden has said he will speak to the nation sometime this week. But his failure to promptly address the nation in public has raised concern.
More cynical games
Biden's former electoral rival President Trump has said that Biden was "not fit to serve from the very beginning." But unlike some in his party, Trump has not called on Biden to step down right away, at least not yet.
Republicans likely want Vice President Kamala Harris to become president ASAP, thinking it will highlight her weaknesses if she replaces Biden as the Democrats' presidential nominee. Most prominent Democrats have already endorsed her, including Biden.
Meanwhile, Democrats have painted Biden as a selfless patriot while dismissing calls to resign as unsavory.
“I’ll use a polite term: utterly graceless and shameful baloney,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said of the calls for Biden to quit.
It's not surprising that Democrats are letting Biden finish out his term. They have been playing cynical political games about his health for years - why would they stop now?
