Trump comes out in support of IVF
Former President Donald Trump just released a strong statement in support of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.
The New York Post reports that Trump did so on Thursday during a campaign rally in Michigan.
This comes as the political left continues to try to insist that Trump is against IVF, among other related things.
Trump, though, is making it abundantly clear that this is not the case.
"We want more babies"
Trump, in his statement, demonstrated his support for IVF by saying that his administration - were he to win the upcoming election - would look to implement a policy that would require the government to pay for IVF treatment.
"Under the Trump administration, your government will pay for — or your insurance company will be mandated to pay for — all costs associated with IVF treatment," the former president said.
He added, "We want more babies, to put it very nicely. And for the same reason, we will also allow new parents to deduct major newborn expenses from their taxes."
A big question, of course, is how would this be paid for. The Post, after all, separately reports that such a plan "could transfer as much as $7 billion in annual costs to the government and insurance companies."
Trump, at the time of this writing, has not responded to this report.
Background
This all comes as the political left continues to try to hammer Trump on two major issues: IVF treatment and abortion.
Regarding IVF, the criticism began when the Supreme Court of Alabama ruled that embryos in IVF procedures can be considered unborn children, which caused IVF clinics to temporarily halt operations.
Trump responded by calling upon the Alabama legislature to fix the situation, which it did. And, now Trump is saying that his administration would pay for IVF treatment. In other words, Trump has completely flipped the script, and, in the process, has disarmed his opponents.
Trump is also trying to flip the script on the abortion issue. The Daily Mail recently reported:
Donald Trump signaled that he could vote to end Florida's six-week abortion ban when it comes up in a referendum later this year, as he continues his delicate dance around a key election issue.
It remains to be seen how this will play out. The left has responded by trying to claim that Trump is just saying these things in order to get elected. The left, of course, knows a thing or two about this strategy. Whether this is what Trump is doing, though, is unclear.
