The Supreme Court has regularly come under attack in recent years, with Democrats insisting that America's highest judicial body is in need of reform.

The latest example of that phenomenon came this week as Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife were singled out.

Senator says Thomas "has been at the center" of ethical controversies

According to Newsweek, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin pointed to the couple when speaking from the Senate floor on Tuesday.

"For more than a year, story after story has broken about ethical misconduct by sitting Supreme Court justices," Durbin declared.

"We're talking about the highest Court in the land—the nine men and women who are sitting on the Supreme Court—who are not governed by the same rules of conduct and ethical standard as every other federal judge in America," he continued.

The longtime Illinois lawmaker went on to complain that "Justice Clarence Thomas has been at the center of many of those stories."

Thomas amended his disclosure forms last month to include unreported trips

"For decades, he has accepted lavish gifts and luxury trips from a gaggle of fawning billionaires. The total dollar value of those gifts is estimated to be more than $4 million," Durbin stressed.

Thomas has come under scrutiny over his relationship from conservative businessman Harlan Crow, who has provided gifts to Thomas and his wife.

Fox News reported last month that the justice has amended his 2023 financial disclosure forms to include previously undisclosed gifts from 2019.

"Consistent with the review of prior filings that the filer began last year, report for calendar year 2019 is hereby amended to include the following entries under the reimbursement section, which was inadvertently omitted at the time of filing," the disclosure was quoted as reading.

It proceeded to list food and lodging expenses at venues in Bali, Indonesia and Monte Rio, California, all of which were covered by Crow.

Durbin says Ginni Thomas has compromised her husband's impartiality

In addition to addressing financial matters, Durbin alleged that Ginni Thomas has undue political influence over her husband.
