While Vice President Kamala Harris hopes to make history as the first female president in United States history, her husband has already made history as the first "Second gentleman," something that has caused no shortage of commentary.

Thanks to his position as Harris, the now Democrat candidate's right hand, Emhoff has been extensivly interviewed about his wife's campaign, and in one recent quest for information, seemed to side-step the key issues at hand, as The Washington Examiner reported.

The one-on-one interview, which is unusual for Harris's presidential campaign, was conducted by MSNBC's Jen Psaki, who questioned Emhoff on his responses to those who are interested in learning more about Harris and her platform.

Questions for Emhoff

“You have a background in business; you have a background actually understanding the economy,” Psaki, a former White House press secretary under the Biden administration, started out.

“When people come to you, and they say, ‘I want to know more about your wife, I want to know more about the vice president, what she believes. And I really feel nostalgic for the age, the days of Trump and the economy during Trump.’ … What is the best argument? What do you tell them?”

Emhoff, who has been Harris's husband since 2014, chose not to discuss the Democratic candidate's campaign in depth but rather described her upon first meeting.

While Harris was attorney general of California, Emhoff praised her commercial acumen, stating that he didn't feel need to "go into chapter and verse" about Harris's occupation.

Emhoff's Answer

“Now, over the course — over these 11-12 years, I mean she is a capitalist. She’s pro-growth, pro-innovation,” Emhoff said.

“She understands technology; she understands the interrelationships between needing, you know, a strong business community, but also making sure that workers are protected. And all these things can be true at the same time.”

He continued by praising his wife even more, stating that she can "understand all the connections" when bouncing ideas off of entrepreneurs in the tech, space, and small business sectors.

Campaign Press Plan

Emhoff, who is now a prominent spokesperson for Harris' campaign, has been seen on Good Morning America, Jimmy Kimmel Live, NBC News, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, among other public media appearances, to express his support for his wife.

At the same time, Harris has avoided doing interviews of this kind, opting instead to make her solo press interview as the Democratic nominee until last week.

Many feel the vice president is too far from the American public and the news media. The New York Times reports that others have speculated that this is deliberate on the part of her campaign, which has instead put an emphasis on social media, town halls, and local media.

Harris’s campaign has defended their media plan telling CNN, “She does a steady dose of media engagements because she believes speaking to a broad array of voters where they consume their news and information is important. It’s how you reach people where they are.”
