DOJ sues Alabama secretary of state over voter purge
The Department of Justice under President Joe Biden on Friday sued Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen for allegedly attempting to remove 3,251 people from the state's registered voter rolls.
Allen's timing for the voter purge--less than 90 days before the election--violated the “Quiet Period Provision” of the National Voter Registration Act, according to the DOJ.
Allen said Monday that he had a “constitutional duty to ensure that only American citizens vote in our elections."
Some legitimate voters removed, DOJ says
Allen intended to remove voters with noncitizen identification numbers issued by the Department of Homeland Security, but the DOJ said that he also removed some native and natural-born citizens.
“The Justice Department’s review found that both native-born and naturalized U.S. citizens have received letters stating that their voter record has been made inactive and that they have been placed on a path for removal from Alabama’s statewide voter registration list,” a DOJ press conference on Friday said.
The head of the Justice Department's civil rights division, assistant attorney general Kristen Clarke made a statement about Allen's efforts.
“The right to vote is one of the most sacred rights in our democracy," Clarke said. "As election day approaches, it is critical that Alabama redress voter confusion resulting from its list maintenance mailings sent in violation of federal law.”
Remedy provided
If the lawsuit succeeds, the state will be forced to reinstate all the voters, both the few removed in error and the majority that are actually registered illegally because they are not American citizens.
Back in August, Allen had said it was possible that some of the voters removed had become citizens since they received their noncitizen number.
Provisions were made for them to update their information, allowing them to then vote in November.
This resolves the issue in the lawsuit and makes it moot, but Democrats have an entirely different goal in mind than the one stated in the lawsuit.
What Democrats want
Democrats are doing everything they can to keep noncitizens on the voter rolls even though it is not legal for them to vote.
They're hoping some will vote--mostly Democrat--and will bolster their candidates even though it will be fraudulent to do so.
They don't want a fair election because they probably can't win that way--and they want to win more than anything, even if they can't win fairly.
