Hillary Clinton calls for an end to Section 230, more control of social media content

Vice President Kamala Harris raised eyebrows in 2019 when she promised to "hold social media platforms accountable for the hate infiltrating their platforms."

While Harris' primary race went down to an embarrassing defeat, Hillary Clinton is now calling for her to honor that pledge.

Clinton wants Section 230 repealed

According to Fox News, the former secretary of state made that demand on Saturday during an interview with CNN host Michael Smerconish.

"We can look at the state of California, the state of New York, I think some other states have also taken action," Clinton said.

Clinton went on to insist that controlling social media posts should be "at the top of every legislative political agenda" and called for an end to Section 230 of the Communications Act.

The law prevents online platforms from being held liable for posts which third-parties put up as well as permitting the removal of content under some circumstances.

"We lose total control" if social media isn't moderated

"We should be, in my view, repealing something called Section 230, which gave, you know, platforms on the internet immunity because they were thought to be just pass-throughs, that they shouldn't be judged for the content that is posted," Clinton said.

"But we now know that that was an overly simple view, that if the platforms, whether it's Facebook or Twitter/X or Instagram or TikTok, whatever they are, if they don't moderate and monitor the content, we lose total control," she asserted.

Clinton isn't the only one who would like to see greater oversight concerning what people can share online, as California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff has taken a similar position.

As Breitbart noted, Schiff and other Democratic lawmakers signed on to a letter which was sent to the heads of social media companies last week.

Schiff says misinformation threatens "our democracy"

"As the technology on social media platforms rapidly expands, companies must redouble their efforts to combat issues that threaten our democracy," the letter stated.

However, critics mocked Schiff for railing against misinformation given that he long promoted the baseless claim that former President Donald Trump colluded with Russia in 2016.

Fox News reported in June of 2023 that the House of Representatives voted to censure Schiff after a resolution was put forward by Florida Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna.
