Former first lady Melania Trump has expressed her gratitude for her husband's Secret Service detail and herself in the wake of two assassination attempts, but she has also admitted that she isn't entirely confident in the agency's leadership.

During his 2024 election campaign, former President Donald Trump has been the target of two assassination attempts, as the New York Post reported.

During a July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a gunman opened fire, resulting in the former president bleeding from his ear. This was the first attempt made.

The second incident occurred last month when Secret Service agents successfully prevented a shooter from establishing a compound near Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Melania's Take on the Threats

Melania Trump stated during a conversation that the country is "more divided than ever before," which is why such threats persist.

“We are dealing with much more danger — especially since we see what’s going on in the world and the threats that we get — and my husband, what he went through in the last few months,” she said.

“Every event that has happened, I’m thinking, ‘What is next? What are they trying to do?’ You always fear the worst.”

Reactions to Assassination Attempts

Melania Trump said that she was horrified to see Secret Service agents jump on her husband as gunshots rang out during the first assassination attempt.

Regardless of their response, the former First Lady saw the agency's inability to offer better protection for her husband, the former president, as her main criticism.

“It was really frightening, and life stops in those few minutes; it was really very difficult,” she said, giving insight into what it was like to see her husband the subject of an attempted assassination attempt.

While the former first lady was quick to offer a kind word for the agents they work with, she was also clear this believes there are issues to be resolved: “The men with me and my husband are fantastic. But I feel it’s the top leadership; there are some holes and problems.”

Problems Start at the Top

“It comes from the top leadership that that happened,” she added. “I know and I have knowledge that our team asked many times for more security, more help, and they were denied.”

Kimberly Cheatle, the former director of the Secret Service, resigned shortly after the initial assassination attempt in July, as a result of significant pressure from legislators.

The incident was described by her as the agency's most significant failure in its history during her testimony before Congress.
